I’ve come to woodworking in a roundabout way. I was born and raised in a New York City housing project with little opportunity for woodworking. Since moving out of the city 30+ years ago, I started getting involved in woodworking. I find it relaxing, inspirational and exciting. My designs have been evolving over time; I started out making jewelry boxes from plans found in woodworking magazines. Although satisfied with the final product, I began designing my own jewelry boxes and today all of my boxes are my own designs. 

I use both domestic and exotic hardwoods. The joints are simple and attractive rabbet joints and miter joints. “The process” relaxes me; that is, planning out which step should be done next, and then doing that step. 

Thinking of new box designs inspires me. One of my recent box designs incorporates an abstract, windswept tree growing up and over the jewelry box. 

Once I finish the box, I find the next step most exciting; applying the finish. I use a high quality Danish oil. It makes the wood grain come alive. 

Woodworking helps me validate the journey I’ve taken, from an inner city childhood to  where I am today.
